The countdown to the 2nd annual Top Drawer Burlesque Expo is quickly winding down and that means everything in my life is moving at warp speed. Over the last two months I've been helping the producers with sponsorships and rehearsing my numbers. To say I've been busy is a complete understatement. As it hit the 2 week mark things started moving even faster! From podcasts to rehearsals to crafting to NORMAL life, it's been a whirlwind of fun.
I was invited by the fabulously talented producers, Mona Montague and Musette The Mistress of Mischief, to join them on a Podcast with Curious North. We talked about the festival, how we got started with burlesque, a little about the Twin Cities burlesque history and even some of the reactions we receive when we tell people about our after-muggle-hours activities. You can listen to that by clicking here.
The Wicked Wenches Cabaret has been putting in some serious hours for our group number that will be in the 10 PM Saturday showcase. Two 3-4 hour rehearsals per week should make for a great debut of this brand new act. It's been challenging to learn the choreography, make the costumes and polish the routine. I'm especially proud of how hard the ladies have worked and I think it will definitely show on stage.
Sunday marked the first official Top Drawer sanctioned event with a group crafting day. Six hours filled with needle and thread, E6000 (rhinestone glue for those out of the loop), rhinestones, sequins, fringe and even some metal studs! Lots of ladies and a few gentlemen were huddled diligently over their costuming projects in preparation for the upcoming weekend of shows. While I managed to finish one project...I found 5 more waiting for me at rehearsal two nights later.
Last night I spent 3 hours with Red Austere, Moonshine Matinee and Tart Deco. We were rehearsing our solo numbers (and my duet with Tart) at the Ginger Rocket studio (The Launch Room) so we could get out the last few kinks and even receive some helpful feedback. While I practiced my solo to a purely instrumental version of my song for the first time in prep for my first live band accompaniment, I managed to pop loose some of my beading on my sparkly underthings. I was really annoyed...it just meant MORE work before Friday's show! Once Tart made it to the studio (she's a Lumber Jill in real life so she worked late into the daylight) we ran through our routine and I immediately realized I had some costume issues. Not only was my zipper sticking but rhinestones were popping off like raindrops. MORE WORK!
Tonight will be another WW rehearsal, performer swag bag filling and more costuming. That's all working on the assumption that I'll be able to keep my eyes open long enough to accomplish ANY of that! The days to follow will be a tornado of activity with performer registrations, tech rehearsals, performer happy hour, and more and more rehearsals and costuming. I informed my Fiance that he can expect to see me next week.
I'm hoping to fill my next post with all the glittery happenings from over the course of the weekend. Stay tuned!
